Musica Antiqua Ensemble
was established in Hévíz,
in 1977, formed by the students of Illyés Gyula Primary School under the direction of József Adorján, with the aim of performing primarily music of old times. The characteristic
and unique sonority of the chamber orchestra is provided
by the sound combination of the flutes and different
strings. Renaissance, baroque and classical music
are played on their concerts, where members of the
ensemble are dressed up in renessaince costumes.
After their successful attendance in a famous TV contest called „KI
MIT TUD” (Who knows what – ford.) in 1983, the ensemble was invited in several radio and TV shows, both
in Hungary and abroad (ORF, ZDF, NDR).
In 1985, in Belgium the ensemble received ’cum
laude’ first prize on the 33rd Festival of the European Junior Orchestras, and ’Pro Musica’ medallion of the Belgian Ministry of Culture. The jury’s judgement on the performance was the following: ’The interplay of the band is very good, all compositions were interpreted in
an interesting way and style. The tone is beautiful, the intonation is good.
This group of musicians is endowed with talents beyond average and a very good
mediator of the music of old times.’
Petrovics Emil’s opinion about the ensemble was: ’It
was Musica Antiqua Ensemble and its director, József Adorján, who first recognised the insistent warrant of playing music of old times in
modern times. Besides their knowledge and diligence, it was this determining
notion that brought well-earned success. What makes their performance particularly
appealing is the deep understanding of the beauty of music together with wholehearted
empathy and that enchanting internal (and external) elegance, the help of which
the audience is involved in the comprehesion and pleasure of these secret delights.’
In 1989, the Ministry of Culture honoured Musica Antiqua Ensemble with the title
of ’Ensemble
of Excellence’.
The ensemble has been directed by Endre Varga since 1997.
